Building an Immersive Universe Outside the Screen.

For San Diego Comic-Con 2025, BBC sought to bring the world of Doctor Who into a physical, walkthrough experience that would captivate one of the most dedicated fan communities in entertainment. The activation needed to function as a multi-zone environment – an exterior “hero moment” facade that stopped foot traffic in the outdoor plaza, an immersive interior themed as a UNIT (Unified Intelligence Taskforce) research facility, and a branded retail component for event merchandise. Two Eighteen was brought in to handle the full fabrication and production, transforming the BBC’s creative vision into a large-scale build that could withstand the energy of Comic-Con’s peak attendance days.

Engineering a Multi-Zone Experience.

Coordinating outdoor and indoor fabrication for a convention center plaza.

Two Eighteen’s project management team coordinated the full production timeline from our Las Vegas facility to the San Diego Convention Center campus. The build required outdoor structural installation in the plaza, indoor immersive environment construction, and a separate retail display zone – all under Comic-Con’s compressed load-in schedule. Our engineering team developed plans for the curved exterior facade to handle outdoor conditions while our scenic team designed the interior UNIT environment to deliver a convincing themed experience within the footprint’s constraints.

Custom Scenic Fabrication.

From curved facades to immersive themed interiors.

The signature exterior piece was a massive curved wall facade – approximately 15-20 feet tall – featuring rows of deeply recessed circular disc cutouts across its entire surface, with a central arched doorway inspired by the TARDIS interior aesthetic. Our custom fabrication team built the panels from CNC-routed composite material, finished in smooth light grey with precise dimensional detailing on every disc. Inside, we constructed a fully immersive UNIT-themed environment: industrial black powder-coated steel shelving units loaded with custom-branded crates and props, dramatic red and crimson LED accent lighting, exposed ductwork elements, yellow-and-black hazard tape detailing, and large-format UNIT logo signage. A separate merchandise zone featured a cobalt blue perforated steel shelving unit designed for retail display of Doctor Who branded products.

Full On-Site Delivery.

All components were fabricated and test-fitted at our Las Vegas facility before shipping to San Diego. On-site, the build unfolded in phases. The curved exterior facade was erected first in the outdoor plaza, anchoring the activation’s footprint and queue flow. Interior construction followed: the UNIT environment was assembled zone by zone, starting with structural framing and industrial shelving, then layered with LED lighting, graphic panels, and branded props. The cobalt blue retail display was installed last to keep merchandise staging clean. Throughout the four-day convention run, our on-site team managed crowd flow, maintained the environment, and handled daily resets before teardown at close.

A Destination Activation at Comic-Con.

The completed BBC activation became a destination stop at San Diego Comic-Con 2025, drawing fans into a fully immersive Doctor Who experience that moved from the outdoor plaza through themed interior environments. The curved exterior facade served as an immediate visual anchor in the convention center campus, while the UNIT interior delivered the kind of detailed scenic production that Comic-Con attendees expect from major entertainment brands. The merchandise retail zone extended the brand interaction beyond the experience itself. This project demonstrates Two Eighteen’s capability to serve brands and agency partners alike – delivering multi-zone immersive brand activations that combine large-scale scenic fabrication with precision themed environments.
